Interesting Facts about Educational Interpreting Certification

Many states require a certificate of competency using the EIPA in order to work as an educational interpreter. In Louisiana, an interpreter must have an EIPA score of at least 3.0 in order to provide interpreting services in the school setting. We are working to increase this requirement to 3.5 and higher.
EIPA is an assessment organization. Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is the organization that grants certification (www.rid.org). The EIPA Diagnostic Center disseminates certificates indicating scores earned or tests passed. The certificate and report from EIPA confirms you have taken the tests and earned a specific level on those tests.

To be eligible to receive an Educational Interpreter Certification from RID you must have achieved the following:
- Pass the EIPA Performance test with a score of 4.0 or higher,
- Pass the EIPA Written Exam.
- Satisfied RID’s educational requirements.

Deaf Focus offers the EIPA Performance Exam the first Sunday of every month. Requests for testing slots must be made 5 business days in advance of the testing date.
